This event is a social and fitness-focused skate on the Minuteman Rail Trail for skaters of all abilities. MOM is a good choice for new skaters in general, since it is at your own pace and on a relatively flat and smooth surface. The trail is paved with asphalt and is 12 feet wide. The trail received its name from the fact that it closely follows the path of the colonial Minutemen during the Battle of 1775.
This skate offers both new and veteran skaters a fun way to exercise on skates. It's a great opportunity to meet new people and get involved in the ICB.
Skaters gather on the path just north of Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington Center (Route 60/Pleasant Street and Massachusetts Avenue) around 6 p.m. and leave promptly at 6:15 p.m. Skaters head north toward Lexington/Bedford.
Each skater proceeds at his/her own pace, and goes as far as he/she wishes before turning around. Traditionally, skaters turn around in Lexington Center and head back to Arlington Center (9.5 mile round trip). Others continue beyond Lexington Center to Bedford and back (17 miles round trip). And, if you want to add on another 3 miles – you can skate from Alewife to Arlington Center and back.
Participants must wear helmets and wrist guards, and complete safety gear is encouraged. Lights are recommended, particularly early and late in the season. The skate will be cancelled due to wet pavement, rain, or other bad weather, with no notification posted.
