Skating hand signals are in common use across the country. Note that all of the signals are ideally done with both hands — this is so the possibility of confusion due to the signaler doing one thing with one hand and another thing with the other is minimized.

The voice alerts are clues to actions required or upcoming situations—they help skaters to "be aware," in the best sense of the word.
