Woburn

Horn Pond is one of Woburn’s most popular gathering spots. On a warm evening in the summer, residents often take leisurely strolls around the pond to enjoy the shade and the cool breezes; in the winter the area is used for cross country skiing and ice skating. The site is open year round and 24 hours a day. Located close to the center of town, Horn Pond borders the Woburn Country Club. In addition to some interesting inline skating, Horn Pond offers excellent picnicking, fishing, walking, and jogging.

How to Get There

To get to Horn Pond from the north or the south take the Winn Street exit off Rte. 128 and head east to Woburn center. Turn right on Pleasant St. and head west. At the first light, about two tenths of a mile, turn left onto Arlington Street. Head south on Arlington Street until you come to the pond on your right. Stay on Arlington Street and follow the pond to the end where there is a municipal parking lot. Horn Pond can also be approached from the center of Boston. Get on Mass Ave and head toward Arlington. At Arlington Center turn right on Rte. 60. Rte. 60 quickly becomes Rte. 3. Follow Rte. 3 to Winchester. Just after a nursery and before the Star Market, turn right on Pond Street and follow to Horn Pond. Horn Pond will be on your left about two miles down.

Where to Skate

Where to Skate Begin the loop in the municipal parking lot. Then head towards the Woburn Pumping Station, a red brick building that looks like a fire house. Follow the path through the break in the chain link fence, turn right, and head up the hill. At the top of the hill bear right and head north. Follow the road to Sturgis Street. The road is nicely shaded and passes a parking lot and a beach. Sturgis Street is a public road open to automobile traffic. It heads up a short but steep hill to Arlington Street. Your legs will burn a little on this one, but Arlington Street offers a smooth downhill half mile glide back to the parking lot. Stay on the street or enjoy the smooth and safer pavement of the sidewalk.
