Lowell Lowell is an old mill town with several interesting places to skate. Lowell’s Merrimack River trail offers a nice, flat, short skate on smooth pavement. An excellent time to explore this route is on a weekend, during one of Lowell’s many rowing regattas.
To get to the river, take Rte. 3 north, past Rte. 495, to the Drum Hill rotary. Exit to Drum Hill Road and follow for about two miles, until you come to the Merrimack River. Proceed straight and cross the river. At the other side of the river take an immediate right on Rte. 113. About two tenths of a mile on your left is the Lowell Boat House parking lot. This is a good place to start. The trail follows the river. You can take the trail up the river to the bridge you crossed, or you can proceed down the river. The trail down the river starts behind the boat house and then follows the river bank. A wonderful ice cream shop, located at the end of the trail, is popular with students and local residents.
